Finding Things

unidentified signal source

One of the most difficult part of many missions is that they send you off to a system in which you don’t see the thing you were sent there to find. Such things include, but are not limited to:

  • Black Boxes
  • Rebel Communications Canisters
  • Pirates
  • Traders
  • Miscreants
  • Cargo

The solution to your problem is simple, and it breaks down to this:

Your Patience will be rewarded.

So here’s the thing. The Info panel is not your greatest ally or even neutrally aligned associate in this situation, though in rare instances it will provide some hints in the right direction.

What you are looking for in almost all instances of this kind of mission is something that is either a “weak signal source” or “strong signal source” or an “unidentified signal source”. This can end up being either pirates, cargo canisters of indeterminate composition, Black Boxes, Rebel comm canisters, pirates, traders, miscreants, new and improved opportunities for getting blown the hell outta here, luxury traders, system authorities, and so forth.

The first one you encounter may not be what you are looking for. Nor the second. But be certain that, if you are patient, eventually the goal which you are seeking will be revealed.

These will not (usually) appear on your system scan panel. Instead, you have to move around, change your orientation, and actually look for the things for which you are looking for.

Here’s what you’re looking for.

USS1

USS2

This isn’t Eve, or WoW, or anything any way remotely resembling them. You’ll have to work at it, but the things for which you seek are out there.

That may  be more Zen than you are willing to accept, and I understand that. So let me translate.

Look the fuck around.

Basically, anything that is not a star, planet, or station is worth investigating. You may need to run the hell away from whatever you find, but do me a personal favor and run away when the situation  merits it. This is not DAO where you, the Lone Avenger, can overcome anything.

Here endeth the lesson.
